Demolition of Public Housing in New Orleans Draws Protest

Coalition to Protect Public Housing Member among the Protesters Arrested

NEW ORLEANS, Dec. 15 - Residents and supporters gathered outside St. Bernard Housing Development on Saturday for a demonstration that was energetic and peaceful until local police, accompanied by U.S. military personal, arrived to clear the area. Three arrests were reported, including J.R. Fleming, of the Poor People's Economic Campaign for Human Rights and, MCHR member, Coalition to Protect Public Housing, who traveled to New Orleans with a group of young activists.

More than one hundred residents, housing advocates, and supporters marched up St. Bernard Avenue with a clear message of “no demolitions” and “right of return for all.” The event culminated a week of activities in New Orleans and around the country to raise awareness of the imminent demolitions of roughly 4,500 of public housing units at a time when this city faces a dire post-Katrina housing crisis.

The protest remained peaceful until local police and U.S. military officials arrived. They were seen shoving and pushing media and protesters until the streets were clear. As for the three arrests, it remains unclear as to what charges were brought against the individuals. Protesters followed the arrestees to Orleans Parish Prison, where demonstrations continued.
