The Hunger Series: Feeding the World and Feeding the Community

The Iowa City Congregational United Church of Christ (UCC) is hosting a seven part educational series addressing hunger issues. The series will bring together academics, activitists, farmers, and service providers who have firsthand expertise with hunger issues on the international, national and local levels. This series of events will beging run from January 8 through February 19.

In light of the recently published report by the Iowa Policy Project indicating that over 12% of Iowans suffer from hunger issues, the congregation hopes that the series will both educate people about hunger issues and spur them to action.

The first event will be a screening of the film Silent Killer: the Unfinished Campaign against Hunger. this award winning one-hour documentary for public television is hosted by National Public Radio's Scott Simon. There are still a billion hungry people in the world. Fifteen thousand children--the equivalent of five times the number of victims of the World Trade center bombings--die each day of hunger. Yet it doesn't have to be this way. We can end hunger if we make a commitment to doing so. Discussion will follow the film.
