The International Criminal Court, established by a United Nations treaty in July 1998 at the Rome Conference, is the world’s first permanent, independent criminal court. A decade after the Rome Conference, with 105 countries now a party to its statute, the ICC has gained wide-ranging recognition for its potential role in putting an end to impunity for such crimes as genocide, crimes against humanity, and war crimes.
This conference is designed to reflect on the achievements of the Court as well as the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead of it.
A wide variety of issues will be discussed, including the situations in Darfur, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and Uganda. The distinguished speakers include the President of the ICC, its Prosecutor, the United States Presidential Special Envoy to Sudan, and a number of eminent law professors from Case Western Reserve University, Northwestern University, the University of California Hastings College of the Law, the University of Notre Dame, Washington University, and Washington and Lee University.
