Resources for Detained Immigrants

The Midwest Coalition for Human Rights can direct immigrants detained in the Midwest to resources and legal service providers that may be of assistance. If you are or know a detained immigrant, the following resources may be of use to you.

Free Legal Service Providers for Immigrants and Asylum Seekers

The U.S. Department of Justice, Executive Office for Immigration Review maintains a list of free legal service providers around the country. The list is organized by state and takes note of the specific area in which each organization works.

ICE Detainee Locator System

On Friday, July 23 2010, Immigration and Customs Enforcement launched an online tool with the ability to locate a detainee who is currently in U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) custody, or who was released from ICE custody for any reason within the last 60 days. If this tool proves to be effective, it will be useful for famlies that wish to contact loved ones and for service providers that need to be in touch with clients.

Know Your Rights

Members of MCHR's Immigrant Detention Project routinely conduct "Know Your Rights" Presentations to local immigrant communities and at detention facilities in an effort to curb the recent increase in enforcement activity by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). By downloading these advocacy documents and informing your community, you can assist both documented and undocumented immigrants in learning their rights and protections under U.S. and international laws. See the following links for "Know Your Rights" materials produced in multiple languages by the National Immigrant Justice Center:
