MCHR Involvement in Reports Submitted to the United Nations Universal Periodic Review

August 11, 2010 - The Midwest Coalition for Human Rights is pleased to announce its contribution to and endorsement of a variety of reports submitted to the United Nations Universal Periodic Review (UPR). Universal Periodic Review is a human rights mechanism established in 2006 and administered by the UN Human Rights Council which periodically evaluates the human rights record of Member States to the United Nations. The United States will be evaluated for the first time by the Ninth Session Working Group on the UPR in November of 2010. As a part of this process, civil society organizations submit reports concerning human rights violations occurring in the United States.

The Midwest Coalition is a contributing stakeholder to member organization The National Immigrant Justice Center's UPR report discussing Human Rights Violations in the Immigrant Detention System. Additionally, MCHR has endorsed the following reports submitted by non-profit and nongovernmental organizations to the Ninth Session Working Group on the UPR: CERD Implementation, Criminal and Juvenile Justice, Treaty Ratification, and a report authored by MCHR member organization The Advocates for Human Rights discussing Migrants, Refugees, and Asylum Seekers
