Public Welfare Foundation

In March of 2010, the Coalition received a $25,000 grant from the Public Welfare Foundation to fund a regional worker’s rights initiative. This grant will be used for a joint effort between the Coalition and Nebraska Appleseed Center for Law in the Public Interest to continue acting on the momentum generated by Nebraska Appleseed’s 2009 safety report “The Speed Kills You”: The Voice of Nebraska’s Meatpacking Workers. This initiative aims to promote systemic change in meatpacking work and safety conditions on several levels, focusing in particular this second year on strengthened federal OSHA and USDA regulation and greater state level oversight. These goals will be accomplished through an integrated mix of policy advocacy, lobbying, community education and communication strategies, legal work, research, and community organizing.
