Since 2003, The Advocates for Human Rights has been working with the Immigrant and Refugee Battered Women's Task Force (IRBWTF) and Pangea World Theater to educate Minnesotans about domestic violence in the state's immigrant and refugee communities.
The Pangea World Theater developed a play which acts out the stories of battered immigrant and refugee women, and helps illuminate some of the barriers they face in seeking government help. Since 2005, this "Journey to Safety" performance and training has been presented 25 times to lawyers, judges, and police officers, among others.
The next step in this project is to bring Journey to Safety to immigrant communities and the social service agencies that serve them. In addition to the play, these Journey to Safety events will also feature a resource fair to help make a variety of necessary services readily available for our audiences. The resource fairs will include representatives of organizations dealing with education, elder issues, employment, food, health, housing, immigration, public benefits, and youth and family. All of these issues are seen as being part of the context of battered immigrant and refugee women and their families.
Please join The Advocates for Human Rights for this first of several Journey to Safety events to take place throughout the state of Minnesota.
