This Wednesday, January 9, 2008, the Chicago City Council is set to approve the settlement in the four of Chicago Police torture civil rights cases of Leroy Orange, Madison Hobley, Stanley Howard and Aaron Patterson (all four were pardoned on the basis of their innocence in 2003). This is indeed a great victory, but we must fight on and push for continued justice and accountability in these cases. Join us in calling for:
- The federal prosecution of Jon Burge and other Area 2 and 3 Officers for their alleged acts of perjury and obstruction of justice;
- New hearings for the 26 African American men who remain behind bars as a result of wrongful convictions based in whole or in part on their tortured confessions;
- Reparations and psychological counseling on behalf of all the of the torture victims;
- A new federal criminal statute proscribing the crime of torture by domestic law enforcement officials with no statute of limitations;
- The City to settle with torture victim Darrell Cannon in his torture civil rights case; and
- The County of Cook to settle with the torture victims in their civil rights cases.
